About Leadership in Men's Core Groups at Bethel

What is a Men’s Core Group?
A men’s core group is a deep community for brothers in which friendship is the foundation. It is a place where discipleship happens naturally and men thrive spiritually, emotionally and physically.

What is the Job of a MCG Leader?
The primary job of a leader in our groups is to create and maintain a culture that facilitates the fellowship of brothers that leads to growth together as disciples. Leaders also lead the way, and serve as shepherds for their brothers.

What Does “We Lead Together” mean?
Leading together is a foundational principle in our core groups. It means that MCG leaders commit to being part of a leader team and part of the larger network of MCG leaders. New leaders initially meet weekly with their leader team, but may later change to a meeting frequency that best suits their needs. The network of all leaders will meet at least several times annually. Additionally, we ask that all leaders work toward recruiting a co-leader in their group, a partner in ministry who can take over in the absence of the leader.

Why Leader Groups?
Leadership is not easy. Servant leadership, the model Jesus gave us, is harder still. In our leader groups, and in the leader network, we grow together as friends, encourage one another and learn together so we can serve our brothers with excellence.

Steps to Men’s Core Group Leadership

First: Be in relationship with the Lord.
That’s an obvious foundation. If there are serious questions in your heart about your relationship with the Lord, we ask that you resolve those before applying for leadership.

Second: Have a heart to serve your brothers as a Mark 9:35 leader, the last of all and the servant of all.
Jesus was pretty clear with the disciples about this. This kind of servant leadership was counter-cultural then, and it’s counter-cultural now, but for Jesus followers, it’s how we roll. It’s harder than it looks: we all have ideas of leadership because of our experiences in work and other organizations, and those ideas may be contrary to the servant leadership Jesus commanded.

Third: Be in agreement with the core values of Bethel https://www.bethel.com/core-values and the core values of Men’s Core Groups (Chesed, Vulnerability, Authenticity, Commitment and Safety).

Fourth: When you submit this form, we will contact you by telephone to answer your questions and provide additional information. If you would like to investigate further, we will get together in a face-to-face meeting so you can get to know us, and we you. If you feel that partnering with us in leadership is a fit and we agree, we will invite you to be a leader candidate and connect with one of our leader teams for a few weeks. We want you to have a good feeling for who we are and what we are about, and we want the team members to meet you and get to know you. Once you feel this is a good fit, and we do as well, we will invite you to join the team!

Fifth: Be a committed part of an ongoing men’s core group leader group.
Leaders first become part of an ongoing leader group, and then move into leadership of an actual MCG. You will likely find that being part of your leader group is deeply satisfying in itself, and a real support as you serve your brothers in a MCG.

Finally: while we are happy to encourage men in other churches to develop Men's Core Groups in their communities, leadership at Bethel Redding is open only to our members and regular attenders.
